Building 8 Update “Something Under the Wallpaper”

I was putting up a painting I purchased recently when the nail I was putting in stopped suddenly and popped out. Something about the sound it made caused me to be curious, so I decided to investigate. After discovering that there wasn't a stud behind the wall, I cut away a small piece, revealing a leather bound journal with a steel clasp. The spot where the nail had hit the buckle was evident, but it was mostly unharmed. After a little more cutting I was able to remove it behind the wall. I assume it belongs to the previous owners, though I hope I am wrong. What I have found so far in its pages has been disturbing. Below is a small except.

“Throughout time there have been instances where different species come together to make a new whole. Jellyfish and ever distant ancestors of humans have combined to make what we have today. Mitochondria in cells are thought to come from a separate organism, but came together for a common goal, a purpose in harmony. The idea of fusing two unlike parts together seems terrifying, but the dream of it, being so intimately connected to unlike parts, to stop being separate is both frightening and beautiful. Amoebas present yet another, much earlier example...”

From what I have been able to gather so far, the contents of the journal are in fact notes. Though I have not read much, there is a clear interest in the unification of forms.

Much of what is contained is mathematically based, and I have had a great amount of difficulty making them out. However, what little experience I have seems to suggest a source in chemistry and physics. Much of what is written utilizes language I am unfamiliar with, and I am certain that great amounts of the text are in another language altogether.

There are numerous notes along the edges of the pages, and it is clear from these notations that what was written here has been reviewed over and over again. I plan on going to the Wellington Street Historical Society, in the hopes that they may be able to provide some aid in understanding what is written here, and hopefully help to get a fuller understanding of this building I call my home.

The discovery of this text only deepens the mystery of my residence, an investigation that began when I was informed of a murder that had occurred in the home shortly before I decided to purchase it. It has been some time since I moved in, but the strange features of the home, along with the odd room I discovered in the basement, have caused me to investigate further. My focus has been on the claims made by the victim, who in the weeks leading up to her death and the death of her unborn child mentioned a creature known as an Al. In the time since my purchase of this place I have found some additional information about the creature she mentioned.

It is said that the thing is a demon; cyclopean, with iron teeth and bronze nails. It is said that it was originally purposed with the spread of disease. Yet as time passed, its actions became more specific, attacking pregnant women and supposedly being a cause of miscarriages. Old texts confirm the supposed connection to Adam that the previous homeowner had asserted, but the story does not stop there. Another tale speaks of St. Peter encountering the strange creature in his travels. After identifying itself, it spoke of its desires, and how it would strangle women who were with child. It would then remove the child, and cut out the woman's liver.

This graphic and strange creature has a clear connection to this place, and it is certain that whoever killed the previous owner's wife was aware of the legends. However, the murder of the woman in this home is not the only time I have heard of the creature appearing on Wellington Street, the story of the missing baby that I reported on four months ago describing a similar attacker with similar habits.

But this of course begs the question as to whether these two occurrences are connected. Four months ago I would have been hard pressed to believe that such things could be possible. But my fear of this place has continued to grow, and I find it hard to not consider the idea that this thing may actually exist. It seems almost easier to believe this, since the possibility of a human being capable of such perverse cruelty scares me more than the possibility that a monster is stealing children and murdering women in the night.

I do not know where this investigation will lead me...I only know that the therapy I have been participating in hasn't alleviated my symptoms. I am still unable to sleep without aid, and my headaches are terrible. The lack of sleep is affecting my mind and I continue to see things out of the corner of my eyes. I can only hope that the path I have chosen will lead to some answers, and hopefully some understanding that will release me from this pain. I am…trapped here. Maybe...if I understand what is really happening here, the source of the strange happenings on Wellington Street...maybe then I will be able to leave.
